Junction Style Sheet – Adrian

Adrian character style sheet for Junction

For larger version, click here.

Adrian is one of the main characters in Junction. As a covert agent popularly known as a “man-in-black” his job is to investigate the phenomenons known as “junctions” and keep them in check, not to mention stifle any knowledge of their existence from coming to public light. This is not a job that he chose for himself, but one he continues to perform in the hopes that his son Travis will continue to have a better life than he did.

I put a lot more work into this than initially planned. In-game the character is usually off screen.

Done completely in Adobe Photoshop. Time taken: ~5-7 hours.

Junction Style Sheet – David

Style sheet for Junction character David

For larger version, click here.

David is one of the NPCs you interact with in Junction. He’s all-around obsessed with aliens—not that he’d willingly admit that. The color of his outfit may or may not change in the future.

Really been wanting to update all the in-game character art, so I’ll probably do a style sheet for everyone. Maybe. Or I might just stick with what I’ve got and save time. But I really would rather everything look its best. Even though I’m not working with any other artists, I’m really bad about keeping characters on-model, so I thought this would be a good exercise. Should prove helpful when I start work on the promotional art down the road.

Done completely in Photoshop. Time taken: ~4-6 hours.

Let’s Draw Heavy Weapons Guy!

Wherein I do a sketch of Heavy Weapons Guy, everyone’s favorite Russian dude with a giant minigun from Valve’s Team Fortress 2. You can post your own drawings of the Heavy here in the comments!

If you’re interested in commissioning some artwork for yourself, here’s my prices and information on how to get started:

Heads up: there may be no Let’s Draw next week because I’ll be doing a second gameplay preview for Junction. I will continue with a new Let’s Draw the week after that, though, barring any unforeseen circumstances. allowfullscreen class=

Let’s Draw Mickey Mouse!

Wherein I do a sketch of Mickey Mouse, the iconic animation legend. In hindsight I should have stuck to original plan and just colored the rough sketch because watching me ink is boring and I didn’t have time to do it right. In the end it meant I had to hurry the coloring phase and didn’t even have time left to do any shading. I don’t even use the magic wand very often for coloring! I’ll try to do another colored sketch in the future so you can see how I actually color things.

As usual, your comments, suggestions, and critiques are welcome. Post your own artwork here if you drew along with me!

Let’s Draw Naruto!

Wherein I do a sketch of Naruto, the yellow-haired ninja of the Hidden Leaf Village. This is my second Let’s Draw and I’m still working out the kinks, so your comments, feedback, and suggestions are much appreciated. Video too long? Too short? Anything you’d like to see me do in the future? Leave a comment to let me know.

I’ve included more varied music this time around. Some of it is from old projects that never got off the ground, while others are from freelance work, and I’ve even included some music from Junction. I’m thinking about including tracks from other artists in the future, so if you’re interested in having your music played behind the video while I draw, let me know. If it ends up getting used, you’ll be credited and a link to your site/Bandcamp/SoundCloud will be included.

Go ahead and share your own Naruto artwork in the comments!

“Higher, Daddy, Higher!”

A father throws his son up into the air. (Artwork by Dale M.A. Johnson)
One day I’ll be big.
Way bigger than I am now.
I’ll be taller than my big sister, so she’ll have to be nice to me even when other people are watching.
Maybe I’ll be taller even than my dad, and he’ll have to look up just to see me!
I’ll be stronger and braver, and all my friends will think I’m cool.

But for now, for today
All I want to do is fly.

This is based on an old sketch I drew some time ago. Families and the dynamics of their unique relationships have long been a fascinating subject to me. Brothers and sisters; parents and children; the way they interact. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the blood bond they share that is not so easily broken? Even though at times, of course, sometimes they wish they were. 😛 On that note, I’m the oldest of my siblings, so I can only wonder what it’s like to have an older brother or sister…

Regardless, the theme of this piece is not siblings but fathers and sons. In hindsight, I guess it’s kind of appropriate, what with Father’s Day coming up and all. Dads that take the time to actually play and talk with their sons are always cool in my book. 🙂

Painted in Photoshop. Time taken: ~3-4 hours. Brief prose intro is nothing special; just something that kept coming to me while I worked. (And it amused me thinking about how the boy’s big sister is implied to be really sweet to him whenever no one else is around to see it.)

Sketchbook Monday #88

Goodness, it’s been a long time! I should have updated the Monday after I got back from my extended trip to Kentucky and beyond, but I was too lazy then—and also busy! Many of these were sketched after I returned.

sketchA much older version of Iccari, playing with his son. This never happens in the book, and it’s not exactly canon. Still, little things like this are what make me want to finish the story so badly!

sketch“The Playful Prince” Though most teenage monarchs who are thrust upon the throne at such a young age in fiction are either pawns, manipulative back stabbers, or wise beyond their years, this boy retains his youth. Even though he may be the absolute ruler of his realm, everyday is an adventure for him and, to the chagrin of many, he can’t stand to stay still for long, often delighting in pranks. His enemies in the court may be powerful and great in number, but because of his kind heart and concern the common people have come to love him. Just a concept stuck in my head, mind you, I’m not planning anything with him.

sketchConcept sketch for the cover/main page art of Under a Different Moon.

sketchConcept art of Iccari’s sister, Nanno, and the design of her outfit.

sketchConcept art of Iccari’s best friend, Namko, and the design of his outfit.

sketchConcept sketch of the river near where Iccari’s clan lives.

sketchConcept art of the two human boys Iccari and Namko spot playing in the river when they go out exploring beyond where they’re supposed to be.

Sketchbook Monday #87

This will be the last Sketchbook Monday for about a month, as I will be away visiting family in Kentucky. Today’s sketches consist of concept artwork for our upcoming game!

sketchSerenity (you, the player). This is closer to what I’m looking for than how she looked the last time I featured her. She wears a backpack because that’s where she keeps her inventory.

sketchDavid, an NPC in the story. This is quite different from my initial concept of him, but I’ve taken a liking to it.

sketchThis is “your” son (id est, Serenity’s son) Travis. He plays a key role in the story, but you’ll have to wait to find out what it is! He’s much younger here than he was the last time he was featured, as the story has been altered and reworked since then.
